Distribution
Antarctica, Argentina, Australia, Falkland Islands, French Southern Territories, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, New Zealand, Saint Helena, South Africa, and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. g. georgicus
- breeds in subantarctic circumpolar regions: South Georgia Island in the southern Atlantic Ocean; Prince Edward, Marion, Crozet, Kerguelen, and Heard Islands in the southern Indian Ocean; and on Macquarie Island, south of New Zealand. Ranges at sea in waters near breeding sites
- P. g. whenuahouensis
- breeds New Zealand (Codfish Island, off the southern end of the South Island; formerly also bred on the Auckland Islands); range at sea not documented
