Identification

14 cm (5½ in)
Male

  • Brown overall plumage
  • Red-head, neck, and breast
  • Dark brown back, wings, and tail with buff streaks

Female): mostly yellow.

Mauritius Island (endemic) Now only found on Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve

Habitat

They are found in what remains of native forests, also degraded forests with non-native species.

Behaviour

Their main diet consists of insects, such as grasshoppers, beetle larvae, caterpillars and spiders. They also seem to eat some nectar and fruit.
