Identification
13·5–16·5 cm (5¼-6½ in)
- Slightly down-turned wedge-shaped bill
- Brownish-gray upperparts
- Conspicuous white supercilium and throat
- Dark malar stripe
- Small white crescent under eyes
- Rufous sides
- Gray breast
- Buff underparts
Distribution
South America: found on the east slope of Andes in northwest Argentina and Bolivia.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized:[1]
- P.h. hypocondria:
- Andes of western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)
- P.h. affinis:
- Andes of north-western Argentina (Jujuy to Mendoza)
Habitat
High altitude (above 2300m.) arid mountains, hillsides with shrubs.
Behaviour
They are hardly ever seen on the ground.
Diet
They forage in dense shrubbery.
Their main diet consists of insects with the addition of some vegetable matter.
