Identification

  • Brownish-black overall plumage
  • Red face
  • Yellow edges to flight feathers
  • Greyish bill

Distribution

Eastern Africa: found in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Woodland, savanna and cultivated land with scattered trees. Generally at altitudes of between 1200 and 1500 m.

Behaviour

Occurs in pairs or small groups.

Diet

Diet consists of fruit (particularly figs), seeds and invertebrates. They catch insects in flight at times.

Status

Classified as Near Threatened in the 2007 IUCN Red List (BirdLife International, 2008) due to habitat loss and low population density in much of its range.
