Identification

Black-and-white speckled forehead, rufous nape and dark moustachial stripes.

Distribution

Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Taxonomy

Sporopipes frontalis has two subspecies:1

  • S. f. frontalis
  • S. f. emini

Habitat

Dry savanna and bushy grassland.

Behaviour

Gregarious. Eats mainly seeds.

Breeding

Monogamous. Usually a solitary nester, but may nest in colonies. The nest is large and untidy with a side entrance; built of grass in a bush.
