Identification

Male
- Red cap
- Thin black band round base of bill
- Greenish-blue upperparts
- Red throat
- Blue collar and moustache
Distribution
South America: found in Peru and Bolivia.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- E. v. steerii:
- Andes of northern Peru (Amazonas to northern Huánuco)
- E. v. glaucogularis:
- Andes of central Peru (eastern Huánuco to northern Cusco)
- E. v. versicolor:
- Andes of southern Peru (Cusco and Puno) to north-central Bolivia (Cochabamba)
HBW alive recognizes each subspecies as full species: Blue-cowled Barbet (Eubucco steerii), Blue-chinned Barbet (Eubucco glaucogularis) and Blue-moustached Barbet (Eubucco versicolor).
Habitat
Sub-montane humid forests, disturbed secondary rain forest 1,219 m and along roadsides.
