Ciconia boyciana

Identification

110 to 115cm. Weight Males 5.0kg. Females 4.7kg. All white, black lower scapulars, tertials, greater coverts, primaries and secondaries. Red legs. Juveniles have browner greater coverts and duller legs.

Distribution

Siberia and north-east China.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Wet meadows, marshes with scattered clumps of trees, river valleys.

Behaviour

Its diet includes insects, fishes, amphibians, also small reptiles and mammals.

It builds solitary nests in forest patches interspersed with moss-sedges and reeds, made out of dead branches with a cup shaped lining of grasses. 2-6 eggs are laid.
