Identification
Notice on the standing bird the pale grey panel on the folded wing, upwards delimited by white and dark. Notice also the face pattern with broad white from base of bill to below eye, dark malar and white chin and throat.
Similar species
Spotted Thick-knee lacks the pale wing panel. Senegal Thick-knee has the wing panel but is is upwards only limited by dark (no white) and usually is more strongly limited by black on the lower side. Eurasian Stone-curlew if overlapping in range would have a narrower pale panel bordered above by black-white-black.
Distribution
Sub-Saharan Africa.

- B. v. buettikoferi - Liberia to Nigeria and Gabon; vagrant to Senegambia
- B. v. vermiculatus - Zaire to Somalia and South Africa
Habitat
River and lake edges.
Behaviour
Nocturnal.
The diet includes insects, crustaceans and molluscs.
