- Aratinga holochlora
Includes: Socorro Parakeet; Red-throated Parakeet
Identification
Bright green overall. Underside of flight feathers yellowish. Grayish skin around eyes. Long, pointed tail. Often has orange flecks on throat
Distribution
Found in Mexico and northern Central America in deciduous and pine forests. Established in southern Texas where it is common in Brownsville suburbs
Taxonomy
Four subspecies recognized:
- A. h. holochlora in southern Mexico
- A. h. brewsteri in northwest Mexico
- A. h. brevipes on Socorro Island, sometimes treated as full species Socorro Parakeet. Endangered.
- A. h. rubritorquis from Guatemala to Nicaragua, sometimes treated as full species Red-throated Parakeet
