Identification

22 cm. Hindclaw very long and straight. Bill elevated at base. Mainly black with large white spots. Rump and flanks chestnut. Forehead, face, throat and upper breast rufous.

Distribution

Local along Andes from Venezuela south to northern Peru.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized, infuscatus and orthonyx.

Habitat

Montane forest, often near bamboo.

Behaviour

Diet includes both arthropods and plant material.
