Turnix olivii

Identification

18-23cm. Rufous-brown upperparts, white chin and throat, olive-buff breast, off-white belly, tail coverts and flanks, grey underwings, grey-black upperwings, white streaks and black bars on back and shoulders, white wing spots, brown bill, with bluish-white cutting edge and lower mandible, yellow iris, legs and feet.

Male - head is off-white, black freckling, grey crown and hind-neck, prominent black stripe (mottled chestnut-brown) on either side. Female - head is grey (sometimes with some white speckling), dark grey forehead, grey crown and hind-neck, prominent chestnut stripe on either side.

Taxonomy

A monotypic species.

Habitat

Woodlands, and lowland, subcoastal grasslands, rock and scrub.

Behaviour

The diet includes seeds and insects.

They nest in a shallow depression lined with grass and leaves, with a dome of grasses and a side entrance, hidden behind grasses, low scrubs or tussock. 2-4 round, white, chestnut, blue-grey or black speckled eggs are laid. The male incubates the eggs and cares for the young.
