Includes Taiwan Hwamei
Identification
24cm. Upperparts are olive, greyish brown with a buff crown and nape which are streaked with dark brown. The flight feathers are dark brown. The tail is dark brown with olive bars and base. Underparts are a yellowish brown with a grey belly.
Distribution
China, northern Indochina, Hainan and Taiwan. Introduced to and widespread in Hawaii.

Three subspecies recognized:
- G. c. canorus in most of its range
- G. c. owstoni endemic to Hainan
- G. c. taewanus on Taiwan
Taewanus is now also considered to be a full species, Taiwan Hwamei. Canorus would be called Chinese Hwamei then. Taewanus is threatened by hybridisation with the Chinese Hwamei. According to the reorganisation of the genus Garrulax, this species is now also placed in the genus Leucodioptron and called Leucodioptron canorum then.
