Identification
14cm. Male - metallic green above, copper throat, copper upper breast, deep purple lower breast and belly, green cap, black tail. Female - dark olive above, grey throat, grey under tail coverts, grey head, green-yellow breast and belly, black tail tipped white. Juvenile - similar to the female but has a brown tail.
Distribution
South east Asia.
Taxonomy
Several Sunbirds (including this one) of the genus Nectarinia have recently been moved into the genus Leptocoma.
Habitat
Mangrove forests, coastal scrubland and coconut groves.
Behaviour
Monogamous.
The pear shaped nest is built by the female from twigs and leaves, often placed in a mangrove tree and facing water. Pale brown eggs, marked at the larger end, are laid. Both sexes care for the young.
The diet includes nectar and insects.
