Location: Coquimbo,Chile.
Lessonia rufa

Identification

Male: All black, rufous-chestnut back, short black bill and black legs.
Female: Less chestnut back, brownish-grey below with dark streaks, two wing-bars and white at the edge of the tail.

Distribution

Central Chile, central Argentina, south to Tierra del Fuego. Winters in southern Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil.

Taxonomy

It is split into 2 species

  • Lessonia oreas
  • Lessonia rufa

Habitat

Open areas with short grass near the coast or lake shores.

Behaviour

Spends most of its time on the ground. Perches on low bushes to scan for insects on the ground, then drops to chase the prey, flicking its wings when it stops. Often in pairs or small flocks.
