Identification

10·5–12·5 cm

  • Male's throat is all green
  • Female has a reddish tinge to upperpart plumage

Distribution

South America
North-eastern Venezuela to the Guianas and northern Brazil; Trinidad

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Coastal areas, includng mangroves and marshes.

Behaviour

Diet

An uncommon robust hummer which favours mangroves where it feeds on nectar but also often 'helicopters' to catch insects.
