Hi does anyone know anything about birdwatching in Zakynthos. I'm going to be staying in a town called Argassi in late June. Can anyone one tell me what kind of birds are common over there which we would consider unusual in Ireland? And where are the best places to bird watch on the island?Any advice would be much appreciated,
Thanks in advance

Hi

i had a couple of hoidays there a few years ago, with my then girlfriend now wife and stayed at Lagana all the birds were in walking distance of the resort.

i saw plenty of Olivaceous Warblers singing every where, Alpine swifts, Pallid swifts, Crested Larks, Sardinian warblers , Serins all typical Medateranian fair.

The best advice i can give is try and stay sober one night and go on a cruise right around the island which takes all day, (shop around for the best deal as loads on offer) as both times i have done this i have had ELENORAS FALCONS!!!!! the first time i found themi was totally gob smacked there were two cruising around the boat for 5 mins, but beware i saw a peregrine 2 minitues earlier!!!

The boat goes past plenty of sea cliffs so just keep your eyes peeled!!! You should also get plenty of Corys Shearwaters and Loggerhead Turtles.

Hope this helps

Phil.

Thats brilliant! Cheers, what do you mean about the peregrine though?

Just making you aware that there are peregrines around as i jumped to the wrong conclusion when a falcon went whizzing past until i saw it land i was disapointed until 2 mins later i had the Eleonoras.

If you do a quick search the forum on here typing in zakynthos i found some more info with people seeing alot more than me!!!! But i had no transport and it wasnt a birding holiday,

it was more this kind of holiday B :)

hope you enjoy it i did both times, and i wish i was going again.

Phil
