Yanji/Hunchun, on North Korean border (1 Viewer)

I will be briefly visiting the Yanji/Hunchun area, Jilin on the North Korean border in early Sept. I hope to do some birding, if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Michael, I was there in June of this year but didn't have any time for birding. I was there for a wedding and was busy with that. The area that I flew over just before arriving in Yanji was some of the nicest forest I've seen in northeast China. Changbaishan (mountain) is not far from there is many birds breed in the area. In early September, many species will be migrating. Yanji city is quite small but has a large river running directly through it that might produce some birds if followed out of the city a ways.

Bai Qingquan is a personal friend of mine and would be very worth contacting. I'm not sure how much he knows about Yanji but he certainly is very active in Dandong which is further down the N Korean border. His e-mail is in the post above.

Please post your trip report on here as I'm keen to know what exactly you see there.

Yanji

Many thanks, I will email Bai and let you know. FYI Dandong is at the other end of the border, around 1600 km from Yanji so he may not know that much about it. I was in Dandong for a couple of days 10 years ago, fascinating place but I didn't have time for serious birding and Yanji is likely to be similar but it would be nice to have some idea of where to go/what to look out for...

I have a friend from that area and we've discussed a visit (in the next year or two), including bird watching, so I too would be glad for any info you pick up.

Bai said sorry, he hasn't been to Yanji and doesn't know any birders there so isn't able to help, but thank you for mentioning his name.
