woodpeckers, N. flickers and great crested flycatchers vs starlings (1 Viewer)

Hi, I'm Jean and have been watching woodpeckers nesting in or near my yard for a few years. Right now I'm experimenting with methods to try excluding starlings from the nest boxes I put up for native cavity nesters since property (dead trees) is scarce in southwest Florida suburbia! I do have one cabbage palm snag in my front yard which has a cavity I can reach, and have suspended a plexiglass shield over the cavity. Also trying a screen hung from the roof of a nest box. Theory is starlings would not be able to fly directly in as they have been doing, and woodpeckers could climb up along the snag or box guard on box.jpgguard on cabbage.jpgand enter from the bottom or side. I saw that there is a nest box being sold online that uses something similar. Does anyone have experience with woodpeckers successfully using a system like this?
