It is generally better to avoid preservatives wherever possible because they are unlikely to prolong the life of a bird table by much anyway. However, look for water-based products such as Fenceguard and Sadolin although it is better to ask the manufacturers if you are in doubt. Apparently, Cuprinol do not consider their product suitable for this kind of application due to the presence of fungicides (my thanks to a kind lady at the company for getting back to me with an answer on this one some months ago). Remember, chemical products can change so that an option that is safe today may be hazardous in a year's time so a quick check with the manufacturers is advisable.
I use a product made by Johnstone's (shed & fence treatment) which is harmless to pets. I have made my own bird tables, sheds and fences and given each a couple of coats of this water based paint and nothing has ever come to any harm. It comes in a variety of shades and if any member of Johnstone's sales team happen to read this........I want commission!!
PS. Leave the squirrels alone or it may be your nuts they steal in the night!!:eek!:
