Window Feeder Help (1 Viewer)

(I’m new here and not sure where this should go) but I live in Southeast Missouri and recently bought a window feeder. I live in a split level home and all of our main living windows are very high up! I want to hang it on a window close to my couch so my kids and I can watch quietly. Do you all think this overhang is too large to be above it? I’m worried the birds won’t be able to see it well or won’t feel as safe under it. There are 2 large oak trees very close and I have a hopper feeder on the ground below. Thanks in advance!IMG_3782.jpeg

Hi Brittly and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators.

I don't this the overhang is a problem for the birds, and it will actually protect your feeder from heavy rain. However, the only issue I can see is for the birds to actually see it and know there is feed there. What I did at the beginning was to throw some seed on the ground underneath the feeder, in your case as close as you can maybe. It took a while but they eventually they realised there was a feeder above them, now I have quite a few visiting every day.

Good luck, please let us know how you get on.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Hi, welcome to Birdforum, I think Delia has already answered your question well 👍

As you become acquainted with the forum, you'll find we also have specialized sections for garden feeders etc. Probably posting there will get you more responses. You are also more than welcome to post photos of your garden birds etc there, enjoy 🙂

Thank you! I’m going to give it a try! Hopefully it will work out well!

I’m hoping with the hopper feeder already under there that the birds are used to food in that area of the yard and will probably place a small pile of food on the porch area directly under the window to “guide” then! I will definitely update after a few weeks 😊

The overhang for my house is 48" and I have sugar water feeders that are frequented by hummingbirds year round and for the past few weeks by and hooded orioles. Both species make use of the feeders. With multiple feeders the hummers are much less aggressive. Of all the feeders I have used over the years this design is the best. It is easy to take apart and easy to sanitize and the birds love it.
