White Tailed Chicks in Holland! (1 Viewer)

Released by the national forest reserve of Holland today:

A pair of White-tailed Eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla) has succesfully built a nest and bred in the Oostvaardersplassen. At the end of March the eagles started breeding and at the end of April the young eagles hatched. They are not sure yet how many chicks there are. The male is a five year old eagle that has been spending the year in the Oostvaardersplassen, together with the female, who was ringed in Germany in 2002. This spring she became sexually mature and the result is there, a new breedingspecies for the Netherlands!

Ofcourse all involved parties in the Netherlands are very careful to give the parents a good opportunity to raise their young. The area around the nest is currently not accessible and being guarded permanently. Intrudors risk a 2000 euro fine.

A great day for birding Holland, that a huge bird like this chooses this spot of land, in our dense country, to start a new generation!

From WestPalBirds Newsgroup:

Today, it was formally announced that the first breeding attempt ever of
White-tailed Eagle for the Netherlands was successful as a number of
hatchlings were seen. See
http://www.staatsbosbeheer.nl/actueel/nieuws/details.asp?NWS_ID=727

There is no proof that White-tailed Eagle nested in the past. Nevertheless,
a few years ago, a Dutch nature organization wanted to introduce the species
in more or less the same way as recently in Scotland. One of the reasons was
a supposed PR effect. Luckily, the opposition to this introduction pointed
out that the wild population in Europe was increasing and spreading west (in
Austria, Denmark and Germany), and that it was just a matter of time (and
habitat) for it to start breeding in Holland. However, few people
anticipated that this would happen so soon. It took a site like
Oostvaardersplassen in Flevoland, with unmanaged herds of deer, 'wild cows'
and 'wild horses', to produce the space and the food for the eagles to be
successful.

As pointed out by Martijn de Jonge, the female wears a ring which shows that
she was born in May 2002 at Garsbek, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Since
September 2004, it was paired with an older male and from that autumn
onwards the two were together, staying through summer, sometimes carrying
sticks for nesting, resulting in nest building in early March (see DB 28:
111, 2006).

The nearest nest of wild White-taileds is 250 km to the east in
Niedersachsen, Germany. It is significant that it may be a matter of time
before other suitable areas in northern France and perhaps even England will
be reached (although, in England, it may be hard to identify wild eagles
from the introduced Scottish ones).

Best wishes,

Arnoud B van den Berg

CONGRATULATIONS!

This is excellent news. Let's hope that the chicks thrive and a new family grows in Holland. :D
Congratulations, too, to all those workers/volunteers/guardians who have made this possible.

Chris,
Latest news is that 2 young are doing their first 'wing-stretching'
excercises in the nest. Hopefully they will fledge in a short time.

Met vriendelijke groet / with kind regards,
Wietze

White-Tailed Eagle Fledgling A Quick Learner

Netherlands » White-Tailed Eagle Fledgling A Quick Learner

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006 at 12:30 pm CET in Netherlands

Holland’s recently fledged White-Tailed Eagle is proving to be a quick learner. The bird made its first flight last Thursday and this week has already been seen soaring gracefully above the treetops.

The parents birds have been seen giving the youth lessons in flight and hunting. The young bird is picking up on flying skills very quickly.

Dutch White-Tailed Eagle: It’s A Girl!

Dutch White-Tailed Eagle: It’s A Girl! :girl:

Posted by Amy on Thursday, August 24th, 2006 at 12:30 pm CET in Netherlands

The White-tailed Eagle hatched in the Oostvaardersplassen earlier this year is a girl. The radio program Vroege Vogels (Early Birds) made the announcement last Sunday. The young bird is already so large that she can no longer be ringed.

Experts claim the bird is a female because she is already larger than her father. In most birds of prey, females are larger than males.

Since female eagles are less likely to roam than males, the future is looking bright for the population to grow in Holland. The female bird will likely remain close to the Oosvaardersplassen.
