Where to watching birds in Amsterdam? (1 Viewer)

I´m heading to Amsterdam as a ”long weekend” in June with my wife. So I don’t have a time to go outside of town. What is the best park for birding in Amsterdam? Maybe Vondelpark? Our hotel is close to that anyway.
And when we go to one canal cruise, is it matter what canal we choose? Whether one is better than the other canal – for birding point of view?

Thank you very much for your advice in advance so…

Best spots for birding are the leafy areas - Vondelpark and Artis Zoo in particular. The canal cruises are all pretty similar, but you could pick one that goes onto the IJ for ducks, gulls, etc. For rarities check out www.waarneming.nl (english settings in the upper right corner). Amsterdam may not be the best city for birding, but it is for pretty much everything else that's good in life - enjoy! :)

I spent a few hours in Amsterdamse Bos whilst transiting through Schipol last spring. It was pretty good and diverse e.g. singing Bluethroat, displaying Black-tailed Godwits, three species of woodpecker, and around 50 species in total.

Thank you Nohatch and Andrew.

Do you know what cruising-companies goes onto the IJ? Is there any web-pages where I could look at the routes etc.?

Are the Bluethroates nesting in Bos? In Finland they nest mainly in Lapland. And I haven't seen it never.

Other species that I haven't seen never and I think they are in posible to see in Amsterdams parks or canals are Kingfischer, Green Woodpecker, Little Owl, Great White Egret, Purple Heron, Spoonbill, Red-crested Pochard, Avocet, Black-tailed Godwit, Mediterranean Gull and of course the parrots; Ring-necked and Alexandrine (Are they both livin in Amsterdam?). Maybe some of those are impossible in the city?

So the Amsterdam is very interesting birding-city for my point of view. And there should be good bier too.B :)

Most of the species you mention breed around Amsterdam but Ring-necked Parakeet is about the only one you're likely to see in the city itself. They are numerous in Vondel Park.

There are several canal cruising companies in Amsterdam but they tend to operate only in the central part of Amsterdam's canal system. I've done the tourist thing a few times (with visitors) and, to be honest, birds were the last thing on my mind! You can take a cruise out of Amsterdam into the Ijselmeer (just Google "cruise Ijselmeer") but I'm not sure you would see that much in June although you might get lucky with Med Gull.

They are around the Waterland area just to the north-east of Amsterdam so I guess there would be a chance if you took a cruise to the Ijselmeer. But they do tend to stick more to the land at this time of year. But you could get lucky.....

I think my wife doesn't like the idea to go cruising at a sea and watching birds, when it is so much too look at in the city itself.
I try to steel couple of hours to myself when wife does hers shoppings... Do I have any chance to see at least Green Woodpecker in City parks? Vondelpark? Beatrixpark? Rembrandtpark?
What about Artis zoo, are there any wild birds? Like in Berlin zoo, where for example the Gray Herons nests (It looked like that anyway couple years ago...)

Do you know is there any list of birds what you might to see in Amsterdam´s parks?
