Where to see grouse in North Yorkshire? (1 Viewer)

The fool that MrT doesn't pity
Hi all, I am up near Thirsk for a long weekend and hope some of you can give me some pointers on good places to go.
I've just read Duke Leto's thread and will certainly try and get to Flamborough Head, but would like some tips on inland birding.
A bird that I'd really like to see, as I haven't seen one for many a year, is Red grouse, so if anyone could help me see one not too far from Thirsk (I'd rather park and walk miles than spend hours in the car), I would be very grateful.
If anyone knows good spots for Merlin and/or Ring ouzel too, that would be fantastic!
Of course anything else would also be a bonus.

Thanks in advance

Bit further south, but Ilkley Moor is good for red grouse. Also apparently Grinton Moor is good (try googling red grouse + grinton moor |:D|)

Dallowgill Moor above Pateley Bridge is good and they are often stood on the dry stone walls as you drive past.

John.

There's a really nice circular walk at Little Beck - not far from Whiby & Ruswarp - which takes in the Falling Foss waterfall (which may be a trickle at the moment). I've had Red Grouse & Ring Ouzel just outside one of the main car parks - think it'sthe Little Beck one, which is on the edge of the Moors.
