What was that night-time bird call? (UK) (1 Viewer)

I have just been out into my North Birmingham garden, and heard, high overhead, a bird-call. It consisted of four repeated, staccato notes, a bit like a squeaky dog toy. It came again after a couple of seconds, then again, each time further away.

Any ideas what it might have been?

Staccato and squeaky I would say Blackbird.

Yo all, on subject of Whimbrel an old North Northumbrian name was "seven whistler" derived from its call.

I don't think Woodcock, as they have a quiet call that is only really heard properly at relatively close distance.

If it sounded somewhat Coot-like, it may have been Black-tailed godwit.

If it was whistled, it could well be Whimbrel, though they always sound more trilling than staccato four-toned.

If someone can let me know how to upload sound files, I will add them to the thread.

Agree with you on the Woodcock, GV - any background noise would be likely to drown out their quiet utterings.

You would need to link to a sound file as they are not allowed to be uploaded by the Forum software.

Andy.
