What kind of Heron and Bittern are these? (Asia) (1 Viewer)

Great responses Guys.

These were all taken in the Philippines (sorry for not being specific)

The last two are the same so looks like an Indian or Javan Pond Heron?

Many thanks!

The link I gave in post #6 is a younger bird than the above link Joms which I used to show the barred coverts usual in Rufous. Nankeen is an alternative name for Rufous Night Heron.

Thanks a bunch for that additional information.

So my last query is an immature Black-crowned Night Heron?

I saw another picture of the immature Black-crowned Night Heron. Similar to the picture you have posted in #6.

Yes, in my opinion the bird you posted here - http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/7411/dscf4136f.jpg is a Black-crowned as is the link you have just posted - http://www.pbase.com/liquidstone/image/58441171

This one, although looking similar is a Rufous (Nankeen) Night Heron - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6d/Juvenile_nankeen_night_heron.jpg
Note those buffy tiger bars on the white tipped coverts, which seems consistent in juvs of this species looking at images (of this age) but is seemingly absent in BC's.

Great! Gotta learn those important things in IDing a bird. I usually ID a bird based on how I remember them as a whole (which is wrong) and not on its individual traits/parts.

Thanks again.

The Pond Herons BTW are likely to be Javan.
Chinese is rare and Indian doesn't occur. They also all look pretty much the same in non-breeding plumage and are generally unidentifiable until they start to come into breeding plumage.
