What is rolling ball effect? (1 Viewer)

When I had a moment trialling some different binoculars, I found that when I panned the shrubs for birds it was almost a sea sickness sensation of not seeing an horizon? Is that the rolling ball effect? Are some makes more prone than others, I tried the Swaro EL old style and found they had more of an effect than the Leica. Would it be something that one would become acustom too?

Yes, it is. Since you can see it, you must avoid bins that has it. Bins to avoid; Swarovision, Kowa Genesis 8x44, Nikon LX(L) (afaik). Bins that does not have it; Zeiss FL, Leica Ultravid, Zen ED2, among others.

Good question, ;) I have not seen it in any bins, a search may find some answers.

It seems the new Swaro. has some reports of it, but most will not see it.

Swarovski would not have brought out the new model if this a problem
of any significance.

I can see it in some Bins. But I rather like it. Long ago, I would´ve paid good money for substances that gave something like "rolling-ball effect"....;)

With Nikon, only the LX L's with 42mm objectives are troubled with this phenonomen. The 32mm ones are free from it.

it may vary from person to person. I have used an inexpensive 10x26 binoculars that's free of any edge distortion. I got a headache when I panned, guess from rolling ball effect.

socksitis,

See my post and Clay's on the Swaro EL thread for an explanation and illustrations of "rolling ball".

What I'd like to know is what the heck is "socksitis" and if it's treatable with Desenex? :)

I can see the rolling ball effect in my Swift Audubon HHS (roofs), but it doesn't make me seasick (or having flashbacks). Most of the time I just don't notice it because I'm focused at looking at the birds.

Indeed! :D
