What does the abbreviation s.l mean in a species name (1 Viewer)

Can anyone tell me what "s.l" stands for.

In a list of moth species I was looking at there are several marked like this:

Amelora (s.l.) oncerodes

All I can find on the web is that others have used the same abbreviation but I cannot find and explanation of what it means.

s.l. usually means sensu lato (literally = in the broader sense) and in the example given would refer to the broad concept of the genus Amelora.

gen. nr. would refer to a placement to genus near ....
similarly sp. nr. would be species near ....

in the example you give, it refers to (so far as I understand) an unidentified species that could be placed in the or close to the genus Nisista.

cheers,

Roger.
