Hi

I hope I’m not going to become a pest on here 🙈

I was out walking alongside a farmer’s field when I spotted two of these birds flying overhead. One of them disappeared over the trees, but this one took up residence on a pylon and stayed there for a good while. I’m not great on my BOP just yet, other than kestrels and red kites!

Thank you in advance!

Em

No Emily,
you have found a place, where many people are willing to help.
This is a Common Buzzard. They come in a large variety of colours and patterns, but as its one of the most frequent birds of prey, please note:
overall brown upperparts and pale, u-shaped band across breast. This is present in many Common Buzzards and helps in ID

Thank you Alexander! I should have known that…

Thank you for making me feel welcome too 😊

LOL Em, the guys in the ID forum, just love trying to help with sorting out the birds we've seen and struggle to identify.

If memory serves me right, I think the dark eye would make it an adult, as the juveniles have a pale iris.

Hi Emily.

As previously stated the images are of a common Buzzard.

I my self am from Ackworth, and in recent years have seen a huge increase in Buzzards all around the village. I few months ago i counted 13 flying south towards badsworth.

In the village we also have resident kestrels, and sparrowhawks. Aswell as a number of owls.

Winter may bring Merlins, and i had some good views of one near hessle earlier this year.

Hobby, peregrine and red kites all breed in the surrounding area with hobby being possible in summer and the other two at any point in the year, although they are not regular.

Rarer raptors are always possible to drop in. With harrier species possibly passing through on migration. Although this is uncommon.

Ackworth is a great village with some brilliant birding spots, you never know what might turn up.

There was a Rose-coloured Starling earlier in the year.

Yes, there have been a few rarities. I know of a laughing gull in 2005, a record of a hoopoe at hessle, and i found a cattle egret in the same area.

There is also historic reports of great snipe and pallas sand grouse in the area, among others. However these are very old, 1800s.

I saw the Laughing Gull in Purston Jaglin which is were I grew up.

Good buzzard population around the white Peak area here in Derbyshire, however I've not seen the pair of merlin this year that have been resident for a while.

Hi Tom
Glad you found your way to Birdfourm, there's a sub-forum for all things Yorkshire here
In normal times we have organised meet-ups for a days birding so keep a look out for new threads called Tyke Meet.
I too saw the laughing gull - I'd forgotten it was so long ago.
