WE found a baby grackle, he has a broken leg and doesn't have enough adult feathers to fly yet. If you have any information that you can share, that would be great! Also if you have any sites that can help please tell me... I know that usually you shouldn't help them and just let him survive, but because of his leg, which isn't working, I find it neccissary to intervene...

PLEASE HELP!

Thanx

First, Gracklelvr, let me say welcome from all of us on staff at Birdforum. Nice to have another Hawkeye with us!

Thank you for caring enough about the grackle to seek help for it.

The best thing to do is to get the bird to a avian/wildlife rehabilitation as soon as possible. You might contact your local law enforcement or animal control folks to see if they know of any in your area, or contact a vet.

Being a very young bird, it needs to be fed on a frequent basis -- like every couple of hours, around the clock.

Strictly speaking, it is illegal for you to have the bird (because it is native to North America), but even the law gives someone 48 hours (I think) to turn it over to someone with a license, like a rehabber (they are federally licensed by the USFWS).

I'll check another site where I hope to find a list of rehabbers in Iowa. I'll post what I find out.

The list got posted before I could finish . . .

I hope this information helps you, for it certainly could help the bird.

I have posted this list for information purposes only, and mean no endorsement of any person listed on it.

Please do let us know what happens with the grackle!

My grackles love white bread. They are always feeding their chicks just plain white sandwich bread by dipping in bird bath and carrying to them. You can tell the juvies because they are always standing around w/mouths open. Mybe try a little soaked in milk or water. See if he eats.
