Vultures in Mallorca (1 Viewer)

Im sorry for the poor state of these photos but we had left the big camera in the car and were left with the little Panasonic camera.
Whilst walking up towards Masanella from the Cuber side (the quieter area) on the mountain opposite were vultures, something seemed very different about these birds, the peak they were on is called Es Fronto 1001m in the Sierra Tiex.

I believe black, griffon and egyptian vultures all live in Mallorca in various numbers. Of the ones sat on the rocks, the 2 together looked very different to the one sat on its own. Could it be a youngster or a different type of vulture to the other 2? On our way back down there were 3 sat together and 1 far out on its own!? Of course they may all be black vultures in different light situations. I understand these are such poor photos that it maybe impossible to id them but heres hoping. :t:

The two flying birds look like Griffons to me.
The perched birds could well be 2 Black and one Griffon. (Are all three pics of the same 3 birds though?)

Hi Jon

The first 3 photos were taken on our way up and the last 2 photos were taken on our way down, so the last 2 photos I cant be sure they are the same birds, but the first 3 are definitely the same birds. On the 4th photo were there is the group of 3 sat together there was a 4th sat away from them.

Why oh why did I leave the camera in the car, it was bad enough that I forgot to take the bird id book to Mallorca!!

I agree with Gambirder, on picture 2 and 3 at least, the 2 birds on the right look like Black Vultures to me: bigger than the Griffon to the left with no clear contrast between the remiges and the wing coverts.

Pictures 2, 3 + 4 show the left hand bird, in each, to be a Eur. Griffon, the other two are def. Black ( Monk ) Vultures, while the flight shots are of Eur. Griffons.

Mallorcan Vultures

I agree the two flying birds are Griffon Vultures whilst the the ones perched are 2 Black Vultures and 1 Griffon Vulture.

I enjoy watching these birds most years when my Wife and I take our Summer break in Mallorca. I know some folks think I'm a bit odd but I really do like Vultures.

It is really interesting to see how well the Griffons have taken to their new Home on Mallorca, lets hope they stay.

I love the vultures to, I find it amazing how big they are yet they fly so gracefully taking very little effort.

Do you know where in Mallorca the Egyptian vultures are?
Is it normal for Griffons and Blacks to hangout together?
Where do you go to watch the vultures?
I have never seen an Egyptian vulture so was hoping that one of these may have been one. Mind you I had never seen Black vultures either until my trip to Mallorca.

Where we live in Spain (foothills of the Sierra Nevada), Griffon vlutures are still passing through on their way further south, I shall be going outside in an hour or so to see if any pass through today. 16 were seen yesterday! They usually come through around the same time each day. Great stuff.

I think Egyptian Vultures are quite accidental on Mallorca tho there was one knocking around the island for some time.

Lots of Egyptan Vultures on menorca tho.

The Artà mountains area is also 'good' for Egyptian in Mallorca, a pair has been breeding there for a few years. Overall, a very scarce bird in Mallorca though.
