I was just wondering if anyone out there has had any on hands experience using Vortex 's top of the line Kaibab 15x56 ????? ......gwen

Gwen,

I am not sure about over here but I know of a few individuals over on 24hourcampfire that have used it. I am hoping I end up winning the one that Doug at CLNY has up for the giveaway this month.

Sorry I could not help more.

Frank ..... That would be great to win, good luck. Iam thinking about purchasing one. Iam wondering if vortex will offer a rebate in the future on these ? ...... Gwen

So true...you can have one barrel and I will take the other....

;)

Gwen,

If you do get them then let me know your thoughts. The "big eyes" have my interest piqued as so many folks seem to be using them for some specific applications.

Frank.... If & when I decide to purchase the Kaibab's I will let you know...gwen

I was just in Cameraland and wanted to try a pair but they didn't have them so instead I tried the 15x50 Vipers which were a quality product for the price but fell far short of the Zeiss I just had in hand. Compared to my 12.5x50 Pentax that didn't feel as solidly constructed, kind of light for a 15 but I was able to hold them decently steady. The Image was pretty good but didn't blow me away, I want to see the Kaibabs myself.

I had a pair of the Pentax 12.5x50 Sp's, liked them but holding them steady was a problem for me. I sold them & got a Burris Signature 12x50, found their image to be just as good if not better & to hand hold them was easy, much better. Iam still thinking about the Kaibabs, funds are set aside, just a matter of time before my Binoholic side overcomes me and I place the order ....... Gwen

But the Burris and the Pentax are 27 and 30 ounces. Do you think you'll find the Kaibob easier at 44 ounces? That's a lot of weight. I found the 27 ounce Vipers decently easy to for a 15, they had good balance and felt about like my 10x42 FL and were light enough I could use my steadying techniques in the way I held them. I Was using the baseball hat technique on my Zeiss 12x45's today and it was working pretty well for example.

So what is it about the kaibob's that make you think you'll have an easier time, the inertia? And are you anywhere near Manhattan, Cameraland will have a demo pair eventually. I have to go back there in a week or two and have one I'll try them out.

As an aside about the Pentax 12.5's? Did you notice they're hard to find all of a sudden and price is shooting up?

The Burris 12x50 I find are easy to hand hold & I will keep these, but if I end up purchasing the 15x vortex Kaibab's they will be used on a tripod in stead of a spotting scope. I see so much better with two eyes. I have not ruled out the viper 15x .The kaibabs would be a little brighter. Iam located in the adirondack mts. in upatate N.Y about 4 hrs from N.Y. city & very seldom go to the big city. I did notice the pentax pricing also , I think alot of the lower priced pentax must have been old stock, now sold out & with prices now back up......Gwen

The Kaibab's are a lot brighter! The Viper's are not even in the same league, and I've owned both. Buy the Kaibab's, you won't be sorry!

For another comparison I thought the Vipers looked to me to be better quality then the Pentax 12.5x50. That was not a direct comparison but just my initial impression.

for those big eyes, do you use tripod to keep them steady?

Yes. For me, that's the only way I can use 15's. Too much shake to hand hold and too heavy/bulky to carry around my neck. An added bonus is, the Kaibab's come with a nifty little tripod adapter.
