Vortex Fury 8x28 Binocular

Hi forum members this is my first post.

I am considering buying the Vortex Fury 10x28 Binocular for £150 and wondered if anybody thought I could by a better pair or that this make can be purchased cheaper. What I want is something very portable that while walking, camping or just generally in nature be able to whip them out if I see something and get a a nice magnified image. They are way over what I wanted to spend but I also appreciate that optics cost money. For this money are the Vortex Fury 10x28 Binocular as good as any (obviously I appreciate it can be down individual tastes).

Nice!!

Hello there and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum :t:

I've gone ahead and moved this to the Binocular sub-forum as it will most likely get more viewing here.

Mr. Nice,

I have not had the privelege of looking through the 10x28 Fury. I have looked through the 6.5x32 and would highly recommend it as a great all around mid-sized bin. Considering the wide difference in the two configurations probably the only issue I can comment on for comparison is the overall quality level of the bin and subsequent image quality. For that price range I thought the Fury was very well constructed and very ergonomic. I also thought the image quality was well worth the price it is listed for.

Sorry I could not help more. Maybe one of the others has more experience with this particular configuration of this bin.

Hi there.

I started birding with a dreadful 12x25 pair of pocket binocular. They wre awful, but I developed a skill to point them just right, as they had a very narrow field of view, some 200-250ft in our units.

Later on I got a 10x36. It just opened up a world for me, to se so much at one time. The magnification was less, but I actually saw more, due to the quality.

Then I moved to a Monarch 10x42, another quantum leap. It was brighter, sharper.

Finally, I had a hard time finding warblers, so I moved to 8x32!

At this rate I will end up at 6.5x.

The point of the story is that at this small size, the 10x offers little benefit. You will see more with the 8x28.

Then, later, save up for a better or bigger model. If you still want 10x, I suggest 10x42.

And, sorry, no did not get to see the Fury. But better the Fury than the Hurricane Vortex. If you must go for 10x, try to save enough for the 10x32 Vortex Fury. It will be brighter than 28mm.

Thank you for all your replies, it is wonderful getting good advice rather than buying something without enough experience and not being happy.

taking points from Tero and FrankD, the Vortex range is good and the range of Fury's are better than the Hurricanes and for the more compact size I should go for a 8x28 as I will get more clarity for this compact size than the bigger magnification.

Has anyone used the Vortex Fury 8x28 and more importantly do you think they are the best bins (look getting the lingo!!) for the money (£140 or $260)

Here is a review I found

The Vortex Fury compact binoculars is truly top-botch quality that can easily compete with other high standard brands. The thing that separates these particular compact binoculars is that it transmits more light than any other typical pair. It has several features that gives its users optimal views. The Vortex Fury has phase correction, which improves contrast and resolution. It is equipped with exclusive xr multi-coatings and fully multi-coated optics, that give higher resolution and light transmission for outstanding view details at any time of the day. Its click-stop diopter allows easy and smooth focus adjustments. Its retractable eyecups give absolute comfort even if users wear glasses. The Vortex Fury also has waterproofing, fog proofing, and rubber armor, to ensure maximum protection under any environmental conditions.

I have never heard this term used before, I took it to be more lingo that us newbies had never heard before |:D|. b and n are close on the keyboard, I hope it means good

The Vortex Fury line in general are very decent binoculars. Probably represent a good place to start to get yourself used to using binoculars. As you start using a decent pair, you will find more and different uses for them and will eventually wind up with several pairs. For what you describe as your use parameters the 8x28 Fury is as good a place as any to start.

As a general recommendation, get the binocular, use it, enjoy it. Do't spend a bunch of time looking for faults, because they will be there, regardless of what you paid for it. Use it for what it is and decide for yourself if it works for you or not.

How is the stray light in the Fury 8x28?

I found stray light to be the weakest link in the Hurricane 8x28.

And by stray light I mean veiling glare from bright lights outside the view (the sun or moon tens of degrees away from the target of interest).

I've only had limited experience with either of these, and both in a dealer store. I found the Fury to be optically superior. I did notice some stray light with the Hurricane that I didn't notice in the Fury, but the Store was really brightly lit and not a real good comparison.

Hurricane 8x28 has a particular "look" that I find rather hard to characterize. But "like looking through a binocular" or "like a picture". There is something "less real" compared to the other bins I'm testing against.

Still a usable compact bin (and I think it's an OK buy for the $90 special offer) but I suspect the Fury's must be better in both regards.

I just added Hurricane chunk to the four budget bins review. If people can try similar tests with the Fury's it might make an interesting point of comparison.

The 10x28 Hurricanes are even worse, in one word: dreadful. About the same as 10x28 Excursion, or slightly worse depth of field.

I got about a week a go my 8x28 Fury for the incredible price of 136 USD on ebay and I'm very happy with it. As you say, light, compact and good optics. I only can compare with my old 8x32 Dia Stone bins which have dust inside. The Fury is way better: brighter image, better contrast and better colors. What I might miss is the lover FOV, but be aware: the 10x28 Fury has a even 17% lover FOV then the 8x28 and that would be to low for me as I also enjoy to vie landscapes.

Well I decided to bite the bullet and have ordered them. Thanks everyone for the help in helping me choose the right pair. I am canoeing down the River Wye in the UK in the next few weeks so will be really useful for wildlife and looking forward to having a play
