I would appreciate help with this one. Photos taken today in SW Spain, at a lake. The photos may not be of the same bird, but cannot be more than one of each of the only pair!
Thank you

That's an Egyptian Goose just like Andrew said :) It's an African species but feral populations occur in Europe.
Very distinct species; please note:
  • Overall brownish colours with white patches on the wings,
  • Dark mask around the eye,
  • Pinkish bill,
  • Long-legged and stocky appearance,
  • There's also a characteristic dark spot on the chest, but it's not visible on these photos.
I hope that helped.
Cheers! :)

I've recently been for an holyday in Portugal and i've seen Egyptian Goose pretty everywhere, from south of Lisbon north to Oporto, within towns and villages, in marshes and along rivers, even flying over the highway while i was driving... It's a common feral species in most of the Iberian Peninsula!
The funniest thing of birding in Portugal was to add to my holyday checklist such disparete species as Indian Peafowl (free-ranging and nesting with pullii in Lisbon and Oporto), Egyptian Goose (everywhere), Mandarin Duck (in Oporto), Collared Parakeet (in Oporto), Blue-crowned Parakeet (in Lisbon), Crested Myna (in Lisbon) and Common Waxbill (everywhere).

Ciao, Igor Festari
