Unbroken Pigeon's eggs lying in the garden??? (1 Viewer)

Over the last four weeks I have come across two instances of a single white egg (pigeons, I assume) just lying on the soil. Both were unbroken although when I disturbed one it broke and revealed that it was rotten. Is this the result of a predator (squirrel maybe) or does the bird have a reason for depositing the egg gently on the ground? If it is a predator why doesn't it eat it immediately? Any thoughts?

It wont be a squirrel, as they have to break it to carry it and get their chops round it. It has to be a crow or magpie. They often store (cache) eggs whole, to eat later, and also regularly take eggs to the same place to eat. It may have been planning to dig a hole in the lawn and hide it before it was disturbed.

Pigeon eggs are white, about the size (and shape) of those kinder egg plastic things, so sounds like pigeon eggs. If it was already rotten, maybe it had already been cached and then retrieved?
