tufted titmouse sleeping in birdbath (1 Viewer)

Last night I watched a young titmouse fall sound asleep on the edge of our birdbath. After walking over to him quietly, I was able to watch him from only inches away for quite a long time. He had his head neatly tucked under his right wing. Moments later a dog barked nearby. He snapped his head out from beneath his wing to see what the noise was about. It was then he noticed me. He stared me down for awhile keeping quite still. After about 30 seconds more he flew away to a nearby pine. That was the second time something like this has happened to me. The first was with a sparrow falling asleep on my hopper feeder.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'd love to hear about it.

It must be a good feeling to know birds are so relaxed and comfortable and safe in your yard that they can just fall asleep anywhere!
I've had it happen with hairy woodpeckers on post feeders. They also tend to hide there during rain storms.... the feeder is set up so there is a platform feeder on top of a 4x4" post with feeders hanging from all corners. Safest spot in the yard!
