TRIP TRAP small mammal live traps (1 Viewer)

I would like to buy a set of "trip trap" live traps, but the address of the supplier I have (Procter Bros LTD, Newport) does not seem to exist any longer. Does anyone know where they might be available?

Wish I knew too as I have a very busy mole and I don't believe in killing them either, I have put two windmills into the most active hills and so he makes more and more and more, I haven't got any more windmills either, but he hasn't returned to the ones where they are.

Be careful what you buy. I have a live trap that was advertised as humane. On the instructions, which were easy to follow, and work it said it traps the animal live. This it does, and unharmed. Then it says you can put the trap and the animal in a plastic bag and dispose of it in the dustbin. There is no need for you to touch the animal.

I still have the trap. The instructions were the only thing that ended up in the bin.

Are they the sort of traps you were looking for on that website, hope it was helpful.

I would think so as they had the trip trap and the mole away, but the mole away is just as effective as the windmills, just a lot more expensive and does drive them further away. I was considering making some of those windmill things myself, and putting them all over the grass. I would also consider putting milkbottles into the ground with their open tops uppermost but they might get broken and become dangerous for all of the garden users.

The best live traps are longworth traps, availible from Watkins and Doncaster, watdon.com. They are the Rolls-Royce of small mammal traps.
The best solution to moles is to look upon the hills as a useful source of topsoil for potting. Scoop it off the lawn and hey-presto, its as if they had never been there.

Well these traps are not meant to eliminate any animals. They will be used in a field study, thus the animals will be released again!

rogerk, thanks very much. These are essentially the traps, however there is a larger model that allows for better protection of the sensible shrews.

For one thing, they are much more expensive! That's of particular importance if you need something like a hundred traps. But they are also made of metal which tends to chill the small mammals much faster than the TripTrap model. Again, it's mostly the shrews that suffer first. And if anything, it's them that should not be harmed in the first place.

Well, I finally found the contacts I had been searching for. So, in case someone else might need the info in the future, here it is:

Trip traps are still made by Procter, but the location is different from what I had. The website given below does not show the traps, however. But it does give e-mail and Fax numbers that are working, and I did get a very friendly reply including more product info than what is on the internet. This is of particular interest for anyone looking for the larger version used for field studies.

Trip traps verses Longworth?

In reply:You can order trip trap from Envisage, call 01793 538822. I'm thinking about doing some trapping in my local area, to get a rough idea of the populations of bank vole's. Does anyone know if there is any advantages or disadvantages with using the metal Longworth traps verses the plastic trip trap?

Domestic use of Trip Traps - love 'em!

I always use Trip Traps for mice that misguidedly join me in the house and they work like a bloomin' dream. I have two and bait them with sunflower hearts then put them in the sort of places the mice prefer to run, along the walls, under furniture etc. I usually get the little incomers within 20 minutes of putting the traps down. I know when they have been caught as they rattle the trap moving around.

The mice are always fine - cheerfully working their way through the free food. They are completely unharmed and I return them outside or I take them up to the barn owl barn as a sort of pizza delivery service.

For Norfolk types they can readily be bought in the very wonderful Thorns on Exchange Street in Norwich.

I do wonder if they would be so suitable for heavy repeated fieldwork as I find that they get more diffficult to set with use. I'd be happy to be told I'm wrong though!

Some one has already mentioned Watkins & Doncaster. They also stock "Trip trap" traps. This link should take you straight to what you need if you click on "field equipment";

I have used Longworth traps in the past and they are effective and humane as long as they are not left for too long.
