Tree swallows nest box takeover (1 Viewer)

I have a nesting box used by tree swallows—it’s the third year now. This year’s eggs just hatched. For a few days now, there seems to be another tree swallow couple attempting a nest takeover—they’re quite persistent. They’re being fended off successfully so far, though at least once one of them made it inside the box and a noisy fight ensued. I’m not sure if babies were injured—the parents seem okay, at least at a distance.

Is it normal for a couple to attempt a takeover? I thought it was more for singles who couldn’t find a mate. And will they just keep trying, or eventually give up? I’m worried the babies will be hurt (not to mention mom & dad).

Welcome to Birdforum. I hope you enjoy your visits.

It does seem unusual behaviour.
