The Lepidopterist moth trap from ALS (1 Viewer)

Dear all

My very old actinic trap has more or less fallen apart and I'm now looking to replace it. My location makes a MV unsuitable. The Lepidopterist sold by ALS looks appealing.

I bought one of the 20W Skinner traps as at the top of that page earlier this year. With the caveat that it's the only trap I've ever used, I've been very pleased with it. It's light, portable and easy to use. There is a bit of a tendency for a few moths to find their way under the walls but that seems like a minor drawback.

Hi Steve, are you still using a Heath trap. If so I'm sure you'll find the step up to a Skinner a revelation. I'm fortunate enough to be able to run an MV in my garden so can't comment on the actinic bulbs but either of the two being sold by ALS would seem ideal. It might be worth contacting Paul Kitchener - he gave the 20w a positive review and I know he has experience of a variety of traps.

I use the actinic bulb from my Heath with the Skinner trap from when I used a MV before moving. But both are in need of replacament. The plastic around the bulb is falling off and tbh the Skinner was never the great in the first place. I have taken your advice and contacted Paul.

Out of interest what were your problems with the Skinner?

The usual ones quoted are the lack of a solid base, although that's easily fixed and (I think) modern ones come with a base and problems retaining the specimens (they escape through the long gap under the lamp fitting), again, fairly easy to modify.
