Tanalised timber ok for nest-boxes? (1 Viewer)

I've been asked if tanalised timber is safe to use for nest-boxes. I just googled a few sites and found that the Barn Owl Trust recommends it for Tawny Owl boxes, so I presume it's ok.

Does anyone know any different?

I've been making bird boxes for years using tanalised gravel boards. Birds don't seem to mind at all.

A couple of sites I have read clearly state not to paint/stain/preserve the inside of the boxes, in case the chicks peck and eat the walls.

As I said before I've been making them for years and the birds don't seem to mind. Never had any cases of peck the box and die.

Sounds like a good idea - I am hoping to make a couple of boxes over the next week and was going to pick up a couple of planks from the local builders/reclaim yard. B&Q or any DIY place provide gravel boards that are already the right width/thickness and can easily be cut to size. At least you know what they have been treated with.

Dave - can you say what type of boxes you have placed and success rate?

As well as making nest boxes from planks, I also got some logs. Cut them to size, hollowed them out with a 1" flat drill. Then drilled a hole in the side and put a roof on top. Quite rustic but knocked up in an afternoon, looks quite good.

Good luck.
