Tamron 18-270 (1 Viewer)

A year ago I bought a Tamron 18-270mm to use with a Canon 50D for an African Safari holiday. Generally speaking I was very pleased with the results and it gave me total flexibilty without having to change lens whilst walking in the bush. Nevertheless for bird shots it is evident that a larger lens is needed. Does anyone have any experience of fitting a x1.4 or x2 TC to this lens or am I asking too much ?

Hi,

With the teleconverter you will have an f9 lens which you will have to step down even further to get any sharpness out of it (f11 minimum). Also you will lose autofocus except if you are using a Canon 1D camera.

This might be, barely, possible in countries with a lot of light such as Africa but an f11 lens is not really something I would recommend.

You'd better get another lens more suited such as the Sigma 50-500mm (around £450 for a 2nd hand one) or the new 50-500mm OS that has stabilization for around £850 for a 2nd hand one or £1100 for a new one).
