Swallows, coming into house! (1 Viewer)

A few days ago I was sitting having a cuppa when a bird arrived in the room; it bumped into the window but was OK. When I went to put it out I saw it was a swallow, what beautiful birds. I had been watching for them in my area, Southern Ireland , but had failed to spot any. I am sure they are in the neighbourhood but had not seen any.It flew away safe and sound if not a little traumatised.
Then today I hear great thumping of paws upstairs and assumed it was my two cats playing chase. After much yelling at them to cool it I eventually went upstairs to find one cat and huddled in a corner another Swallow, it was not injured which amazed, and greatly pleased me, despite the fact that Moto, cat, had ample opportunity. Again I was able to gather the poor little bird and liberate it.
Is it common for Swallows to fly into houses?
Thank you.

I watched a Swallow fly in and out of 1 of our depot garages for about 90 minutes last summer. I was fixing a PC that was taking ages, so i stood in the doorway from the office to the 'garage' where the workmen gather and watched this Swallow. Speaking to the guys who work in the building, it had a nest at the back of the building and was getting in via a hole in the roof, but during the day the guys left the front door open and the Swallows used that instead. They have to get into buildings somehow, and i suppose they can get confused sometimes.

One flew past my wife at the kitchen door the other morning, through the living room,up the stairs and into one of the bedrooms.Luckily i was still in the village and got it within a couple of minutes.
I've had Robins twice in the past couple of years too.

Yes a chap who lives across the road from me regularly has Swallows in his kitchen.they nest in the old houses around here(the eaves ie).I was looking into his yard a couple of days ago,and there were around 12 Swallows flying around.Really low and close.

Thanks for replies.

It is very interesting to hear of other swallow house visitors. I do have the doors open if the weather is warm enough so I suppose that is rather tempting! It is a privilege to hold one however briefly and see the amazing feather colours.
