swallow nest box help (1 Viewer)

If I put up a House Martin/ Swallow nest box what are the chances they will use it.
I have not seen any swallows around my house. But I have seen them high in the sky above my house in the summer months.
We live in the middle of a housing estate.

There was a progran on TV a few days ago about Swifts and providing nest boxes, they had to use a recording of the swifts (near to the boxes) call to tempt them. try the RSBP etc sites for info.

Hi willowa

I'd agree with hayfieldgolfer and check the RSPB website. Swallows only nest in outbuildings and actually inside so would need a well sited nestbox to use, but have been known to use them. I also live in a housing estate. Swallows nested in our garage when it was being built five years ago (no door on) but then they left.

We have a good House Martin population on our estate. They nest under the eaves, but not on my house yet. I have two House Martin nestboxes up for them. For the first time last summer, a pair checked it out and the eaves of my house in general. Hopefully they'll nest this year!

There are also Swifts on my estate, but I don't know where they nest. I've put up a Swift nestbox in the eaves for them too, but you do need a recording to attract them to start with.

Colonies can start afresh so it's possible you could get any of the above. Good luck!
