hi guys I feed the birds with hearts and Niger seed,I use mesh feeder for sunflower hearts, and normal gardman green plastic Niger feeder.the birds are making a mess on ground, been looking for feeders with trays on bottom to stop the mess, can anyone recommend any,or any other ideas
if I leave the seeds on the grass will it cause problems hard to sweep up grass mud is wet.

Nyger seed spilt on grass during the summer will turn your grass sour, I know cos it did with mine.I stopped using it a couple of years ago and went to sunflower hearts and it attracts more species.

well my grass has lots yellow bits in it,
I got a Walter harvester suet feeder for the sunflower today it's perfect,
and for the Niger seed I bought a plant pot bottom put holes in it slid the feeder through by bottom perch stand fits perfect, till decide if gona keep feeding them Niger seed,it's only finches on it,they are loving the sunflower hearts

Niger seed does make a huge mess on the fround - most well known brands sell trays to attach on the bottom of the feeder. However you need a feeder that actually fits the tray so might be a bit pricy.
What I did was jsut used anything I had as a tray - a thin plastic plate for example, just simply attach it to the bottom of the feeder. When it got manky I just used a new one, it was a bit fiddly but cheap!
