on wednesday i'm off to strumpshaw fen for the first time. What can i expect ?
Can any other birders out there give me a bit of base knowledge about whats in store for me and are there any hidden 'gems' in the surrounding area not mentioned on the rspb web site?

Hi Allysdad,

It's a long time since I've been to Strumpshaw so I'm not sure what it's like there now but I did work there for a couple of years in the early 90s. At this time of year you should see lots of Marsh Harriers, with plenty of young birds about. There may also be a few passage waders around, although I think nearby Buckenham and Cantley marshes may be better. Cetti's Warblers should also be about although they won't be at their most conspicuous (i.e. very difficult to see). An Osprey or two quite often turns up at this time of year. If it's a fine day you should also see lots of dragonflies and the second brood of Swallowtail should be in full swing.

A good place in the area is the small RSPB reserve at Surlingham Church Marsh. This is on the south side of the Yare near Surlingham village and it always used to be a good spot for passage waders.

thanks, andrew, would love to go birding in your neck of the woods. One day, maybe, when the wife lets me off the leash i and a couple of like minded friends will while away a day or two visiting the local hotspots and taverns.

Hi there, the harriers haven't seemed too plentiful at Strumpshaw itself recently so Buckenham / Cantley or across the river (have to go via Norwich & out through Trowse, or over the Reedham ferry) at Wheatfen Broad / Surlingham Church marsh might be better (?). But you never know, they are about in the area somewhere ... the Tower Hide is maybe a good place to try from as it has quite a panoramic view over the reedbeds.

Sedgies, Reed Warblers & Whitethroats on the reeds if the weather's good, saw an Osprey along the river a couple of weeks ago and a forever-to-remain-unidentified buzzard last week a bit further up through Brundall. Several other pretty common species also; Reed Buntings, tits / finches etc, grebes etc. Bullfinch & Marsh Tit now and again. Bittern if you're lucky. All 3 sp. woodpeckers might be about somewhere

There's been a Spotted Flycatcher in the railway line / main hide / car park area but i don't know if they will have left to go south yet. Take a few minutes to look at the info board just inside the main hide, it's got all the recent sightings on it.

One thing it also boasts is an amazingly peaceful bit of broadland.

I'd be interested in your sightings ...
