Interested in your picture as I had an un-IDed snake in Cota Donana in 2007 but can't open it. Can you try to re-sub it. Thanks.

I think what you have there is a photo of a Lataste's Viper - also called the Snub-nosed Viper (Vipera latastei).

Agree with Vipera latasti. As said above, it is the only viper found in the area. Cracking find.

Thanks to all for your interest and swift replies. I'm off to Jimena tomorrow, so will speak to the main man with all your information so the finder can be updated.

Best

Juan

I couldn't have taken it to species level like y'all have but I have to say in answer to the question "is it a viper or just a snake?" posed in the original blog that that is the most menacing, venomous looking snake i've ever seen in europe! its head is stunning. what a bada$$ little animal - great find.

Hi Jon!!
You can be quite sure that this´s a Vipera latastei (Boscá, 1878), i know it relatively well, it's the only viper that you can see here in the middle/south of Spain. If the picture was really taken in Jimena, the subspecie is Vipera latastei gaditana, wich appear in the southwest of the Iberian Penninsula.
You can send, if you want, this information and the photo to [email protected], or to me [email protected], his investigation group is working with this and other herps species.
Regards.
