A friend sent me this iPhone image of a young owl peering in her patio door. It doesn't look like the owls that I am familiar with, but then I'm certainly not an expert. Can someone tell me the likely species of this owl? Thanks!

Yeah, based on the location it's likely a Western Screech Owl. They're pretty common around there and have that classic round face like in the pic.
