Have you considered something like this?

I bought one recently and was pleasantly surprised at how stable it is for such a tiny tripod. I attached a manfrotto quick release adapter to the top of the ball head so it is compatible with the 1/4" LP plates used on both of my scopes. They also do a slightly larger version which weighs about 1kg.
I bought it to use mainly with an ED50 when cycling. The ball head is quite adjustable in tension, and works very well with a small scope, though you could replace it easily with something like a manfrotto monopod head (which only tilts up or down), and pan by rotating the centre column. The legs on mine are very stiff, and would easily 'clamp' onto a gate or fence.
The reason I suggest this, is because I also bought a cheap, light monopod (manfrotto 676B) for about £35, but can't satisfactorily hold it steady enough for scope use. The tiny Slik tripod weighs about the same as most monopods, but is much better to use with a scope IMO, especially as you would be using it whilst sitting down and can use it 'hands free'.
Others on this forum have raved about the very similar Slik Sprint Pro-the one with a video type head instead of a ball head. I also have one of these which was 'thrown-in' free (well almost) with the ED50. Personally I prefer the Mini GM model as it has multi-angle legs (easier to adjust for sitting), and fits easily into a small rucksack. It also feels better built, even though it is a variation on the same basic design.
Worth considering before you splash out on something else that might actually be left gathering dust in the cupboard...
Check ebay for the cheapest stockist, as the same thing is available for around £45 at other on-line stores, and you can always return it within 7 days if you're not happy.
