Saw this 2 foot long snake in the Mostnica gorge in the slovenian alps, in damp habitat close to fast running clear water. It seemed aggressive or possibly a bit uncertain as I seemed to be in its way, but eventually it moved off in a pretty straight line towards the rocky side of the path about 15 feet above the waterline. The locals thought it was an adder, but I have no idea, so any help in identification much appreciated. many thanks Pete

It's not an Adder. From my phone it looks like a very dark Grass Snake. Perhaps someone with a larger screen can confirm?

Yes, definitively a (nearly) black Natrix natrix, Grass snake.
