Scaup Type , Letham Fife (1 Viewer)

Seen this morning. Peak at back of head favours Lesser, but unsure if I can eliminate Scaup x Tufted hybrid.

It's a hybrid with that massive black bill tip. Lesser Scaup have a tiny black nail there

Also the back, it lacks the vermiculations that scaups have. Agreed some sort of Aythya hybrid.

Looks a classic male Tufted Duck x female Pochard hybrid.

This same hybrid has been doing the rounds for the last couple of months in Fife (Letham Lochgelly etc) and Lothian (Gladhouse). Agree with Pochard x Tuftie,

It is a Tufted x Common Pochard, as already said

and as shown by the shape of the black area at the bill tip and the head shape .

However, also in this cross the grey areas are finely vermiculated - but much finer than in a scaup sp. x tufted duck
