Santa Marta: Blue-bearded Helmetcrest/Santa Marta Wren Dec 2016 (1 Viewer)

Hey all,

I'm planning a trip to Santa Marta in mid Dec and will be doing a 7ish day trek into the higher elevations of Santa Marta for the recently rediscovered Blue-bearded Helmetcrest and critically endangered Santa Marta Wren. My friend just had to back out of the trip, so I'm looking for 1-2 people to join me. Cost is very cheap. Only $650 and includes food, camping gear, mules, "fixer", guide, and transport from and back to Santa Marta. Along with the two megas, I expect to pick up a majority of the other Santa Marta endemics during the hike as well (with a few additional days on the back end to clean up near El Dorado). This trip involves strenuous hiking, so be advised. Start date will probably be Dec 12

I'll be doing a few other days around Santa Marta for the rest of the endemics if anyone is interested in that as well. It'll be via public transpo/staying in hostels.

Day 1: santa marta to san pedro town (3hours aproxm). preparative, stay one night in town.
Day 2: early beginning of the hike from san pedro. Night in tent in an abandoned farm-house.
Day 3: keep going up to paramo, possibl stay in the lagoons or close.
Day 4: Setting up camping in the lagoons and exploration.
Day 5: Exploration in the higher lagoons where the helmetcrest is possible.
Day 6: All day of exploration. Possible go to a high rocky ridge with an amazing view of the snow peaks.
Day 7: Start walking down to the abandoned house or nearby.
Day 8: keep going down to san pedro town, possibly night in town or continue to santa marta
Day 9: san pedro – santa marta
